Sooner Pearl old sign
Old School BMX
Chad Dutton

It was great reading your story of the old BMX days at Trosper. I started racing in 1980. I Won the Grands in 1981 as a 7 novice. I still have the trophy. It stinks having to take the 7 footer everywhere I move to. I fondly remember the days of trosper park! I rode on the Capitol Hill Bike Shop team throughout my racing career. I raced until around 1987 when BMX appeared to be dying. I often raced Bubba McIntosh when we had to move up a class. Bubba was exactly a year older than me. Racing him made me a good enough rider to compete all over the country. A couple of racers I'll never forget competing against in the national events were "Chicken" George Seevers (Redline), who must have been named that for most riders inability to catch him and Geoff Schofield (GT), who was rumored to be on Steroids because of his unnatural strength. Through the years I rode the likes of Kuwahara, Factory Rebel and lastly Factory Black-Lite. My last bike, with it's titanium frame and forks, was featured in BMX Plus mag for being one of the lightest in BMX. "Chicken" George's was the lightest. I guess he had drilled out more holes than the rest of us! I'd love to find some old archived copies of the old school BMX magazines. I remember the Williams' very well! It was years later when I realized what the smell was coming from their van by the starting line at Trosper Park. My family owned The Edmond Bike Shop and we met Mat Hoffman at the age of 12. Already being an awesome ramp rider and motocross enthusiast, we drug him out to Metroplex BMX track in south OKC where owner John Leisure was kind enough to let Mat try out the track. The trip was uneventful. I guess it didn't get Mat's high adrenaline appetite satisfied. Freestyle was his thing. Anyway, I've got a 3 year old little boy who'll be taking the training wheels off in a couple of years and we'll then awake from our BMX hibernation. I may even be on the lookout for a cruiser!? Hope you enjoy the story. Feel free to post it.

Sincerely
Chad Dutton
